Cardiac interventions are procedures that are used to help treat heart disease, prevent its progression or reduce the risk of damage to the heart. Procedures are performed through a catheter, a thin, flexible tube that can be inserted into an artery through a small incision, usually in the groin or the arm. Catheters contain tiny cameras that can enable the doctor to diagnose and treat issues using specially designed instruments that fit through the catheter opening. One goal of intervention is to prevent the need for more substantial surgery later on and, of course, to reduce the risk of heart attacks.
Interventional cardiologists treat problems with the heart valves and the arteries that provide the heart with blood, including:
coronary artery disease caused by narrowing of the arteries to the heart, a condition called atherosclerosis or “hardening” of the arteries
heart valve diseases including valve stenosis and mitral valve regurgitation
peripheral vascular disease (also called peripheral arterial disease or PAD), which restricts the flow of blood to other areas of your body, usually your legs and feet
Valve and artery problems can cause symptoms like:
chest pain (angina)
shortness of breath
swelling in the ankles or lower legs
pain in the legs, toes or feet
Cardiac catheterization can enable Dr. Nanavati to identify the location and size of arterial blockages, evaluate the strength of the heart and assess the function of the heart valves. Once the catheter is in place, it can be used to measure blood pressure or to inject special dyes that can help Dr. Nanavati see the way blood is flowing in and around your heart.
