Echocardiography is an important tool for diagnosis of heart disease as well as disease management. Dr. Nanavati is skilled in the use of echocardiography so patients in Chula Vista, Bonita, CA, can maintain the best heart health possible.

What is echocardiography?

Echocardiography (also called an echo test, heart echo or heart ultrasound) is a diagnostic test that relies on ultrasound to produce accurate and detailed images of the heart while it's in motion. The resulting images are called echocardiograms, and they can help Dr. Nanavati evaluate the thickness of the heart wall, determine the size of the heart, and assess the way the heart is functioning. Electrocardiography is completely non-invasive, requiring no incisions and no sedation.

When is echocardiography used?

Echocardiography is used to:

  • identify abnormalities in the heart's structure

  • evaluate problems with the heart's valves

  • assess heart murmurs

  • evaluate blood flow in and around the heart

  • identify fluid buildup near the heart

  • assess the heart's size and shape

  • evaluate the function of the heart and its components

  • assess the rhythm of the heart's beats

  • look for signs of infection or disease

  • monitor treatment

How is echocardiography performed?

Like other types of ultrasound tests, echocardiography is performed in a darkened room to make viewing the images easier. You'll need to lie on your side on the exam table, and a clear gel will be applied to your skin over the area to be viewed. The gel helps ensure the handheld device called a transducer will be able to move smoothly across the skin. The transducer will be moved slowly across your skin and may be pressed firmly into your chest in order to get the clearest images possible. You may also be asked to hold your breath from time to time to raise your lungs and make your heart more visible. Most echocardiography tests take about 45 minutes to an hour to perform.

Is echocardiography safe?

Yes, it uses no radiation, no incisions, no sedation or anesthesia, and you can return to your regular activities immediately after the procedure.
