Nuclear Stress Testing

What is a nuclear stress test?

A nuclear stress test is a diagnostic procedure performed to determine which areas of the heart are functioning properly and which areas, if any, are malfunctioning. The test uses a tiny amount of radioactive dye to make the heart and its structures visible with a special camera. Images are projected to a monitor so they can be evaluated and recorded. The dye helps identify which areas of the heart have a decreased blood supply.

Why are nuclear stress tests performed?

Dr. Nanavati may order a nuclear stress test in response to certain symptoms or to assess a treatment that's currently under way. For instance, a nuclear stress test may be ordered to:

  • diagnose coronary artery disease (CAD), a disease that results when the arteries that supply the heart with blood become narrowed, increasing your risk for heart attack

  • guide treatment in patients who have been diagnosed with CAD, arrhythmia or another heart-related disorder

  • evaluate the size of the heart to determine if it's enlarged and to assess how well it pumps blood

How is a nuclear stress test performed?

Prior to the test, an IV will be inserted to administer the dye and electrodes will be attached to your chest to monitor your heart's activity. The test will take two sets of images – one while it's at rest and one during exercise while you walk on a treadmill or pedal a stationary bike. If you can't exercise, a medication may be used to simulate the effects of exercise so the doctor can still determine how your heart reacts to the stress and exertion of physical activity. The first image is taken prior to activity, and the second set is taken once your heart reaches a specific target heart rate. Once the test is done, you can resume your regular activities.
